EBOS celebrated the International Women’s day on 8th March with a brilliantly conceived cabaret consisting of twenty-five songs from a selection of mainly modern musicals sung by a team of fourteen women as an Ensemble each taking a turn centre stage and appearing in up to five songs each. The sense of female empowerment was completed by the female creative team directing, staging the production, and managing the front of house.

The song selection was excellent and enabled variations in pace and style while avoiding some of the best known classic female leading ladies and created an upbeat celebratory feel such as the breaking of glass ceilings as in becoming a pilot in “Me and the sky” or changing perceptions at Harvard in “So much better”, to “I have confidence” about believing in yourself through to a big conclusion with the wonderful “Six”, the inspiring “Sister Act” and celebratory “Stand Up” to close the show. Each was enhanced by simple effective choreography and good use of the stage to provide different groupings in the big chorus numbers and the overall length was well judged.

What’s more this talented company looked like they were enjoying the experience and that excitement and delight transferred to the audience who easily appreciated both the sentiment of the songs and the quality of the singing throughout which so beautifully showcased the societies talents. The theme was clear and as the song “Get out, stay out” says showed they “did not need a man” to put on another excellent show in their own intimate setting of the Pinewood Theatre.
