It was a pleasure to have once again visited with Wimbledon Light Opera Society and this time enjoy their rendition of that classical stage and musical show – ‘The Wizard of Oz’. It is never easy to take on such a well-loved, and well-known, classic and I was intrigued to see how they would handle this  ambitious project.

Congratulations must first go to Angela Daniel who, as Director, ensured this was a true spectacle and one worthy of appearing at the New Wimbledon Theatre.  This show simply had everything in it and certainly ‘ticked all the boxes’ for grandeur, complexity and ambition.  The sheer scale was both wonderful to watch and inspiring to anyone with thoughts of appearing onstage.  The budget for this production must have been huge which, in itself, bring additional pressure and anxiety. The end result was a flawless and polished production that delighted those watching.  I must note, however, that I couldn’t understand the need to try and modernize such a timeless classic and the references to mobiles and the internet did seem ‘out of place’.

This was an exceptionally strong principal lineup and together with the costumes, special effects, scenery and wonderful singing/dancing made a stunning impact on the appreciative audience. The Munchkins, Winkies, Crows, Trees, Jitterbugs and Flying Monkeys all provided excellent support, enthusiasm and colour ensuring the stage fairly teemed with life all evening. Everyone looked fabulous and their obvious enjoyment of performing was clearly felt by the audience. Congratulations to the entire ensemble for a fabulous show.  Whilst I only witnessed Team Ruby performing I’m certain that Team Emerald made an equally high impact during their performances. Well done both teams!
