Having seen the excellent streamed show “Miscast Musicals III” during Lockdown it was a pleasure to discover the lovely Pinewood Theatre for this American Musical parody. I was not familiar with the play, a musical about two guys writing a musical about two guys writing a musical and like many assumed the title was a misprint! However, what a delight to discover a talented cast delivering this tongue in cheek musical comedy about the challenges of writing and producing for a Musical Festival and Broadway with such energy and passion.
The music and lyrics by Jeff Bowen were surprisingly good, full of melodic bounce with some witty perceptive lines about the process with the “Untitled opening number” setting the tone for the evening. Although written as a one act show it felt like over time additions had lengthened it to a point where it needed an interval to refresh the cast and audience alike.
Nevertheless, there was so much to like about the five performers , The Musical Director being an integral part of the cast, and with an enthusiastic and appreciative live audience, it is a show that made you smile and laugh out loud throughout and certainly by the end depart uplifted and entertained in the best possible way.
