The production was charming, funny and well-staged in the modest surroundings of the Village Hall. The main set was well painted, with the back wall taking the various lighting effects so well. The mood lighting of the different settings was beautifully managed. The different levels of the stage and the two insets either side for Ratty and Mole’s houses, worked well.
This was an excellent ensemble piece, with a super chorus of woodland characters populating the stage and some clearly defined principal players. The songs were all real highlights. All the animal’s costumes were so good, still retaining the human inside but with enough of the animal; ears, noses, tails and spikes. Tweeds and checks were perfect for the period, with the humans also in just the right outfits.
Although I'm sure the production was a challenge, with good central performances and a 'chorus' each playing animals and other characters, it was visually a treat and there were plenty of laughs. The audience really enjoyed it.
