Thank you for inviting me to The Effect, the first production of your new season. In the play, we are challenged as the clash between scientific research and human impulse are explored. Tristan and Connie take part in a clinical trial for an anti-depressant drug, but when they fall in love, they throw the trial off-course, leaving the clinical leads, Dr James and Toby to ponder the ethics of continuing with the experiment, whilst they are left wondering if their feelings are real or just an extreme side effect. All four actors were superb and the relationships they developed were strong and believable. The first act was lighter with elements of humour, whilst the second act turned ever darker as the enormity of the ‘effects’ were felt. The director had worked with the actors to understand this thought-provoking play and together, they created excellent characters and relationships. The play was perfectly cast and the performance very powerful. The director had clearly done her research on depression and the psychology of human emotions working with the cast to develop their characters accordingly. This was an excellent production with brilliant cast. It was powerful and thought provoking and a great way to start the season, well done!
