The Alan Menken and Glenn Slater musical, Sister Act, is a popular choice for amateur musical societies with some fabulous songs, good comic opportunities and a wide range of parts to appeal across the breadth of the company. Shinfield Players production makes the most of the opportunities in a joyous celebratory show with a large cast of twenty-nine creating an impressive Nun’s chorus for the show stopping numbers.
The Director and Creative team had done an excellent job with the blocking, choreography and comic moments making the most of the depth of their own stage to create attractive pictures and give each character a strong distinctive personality. There was a delightful contrast and interplay between the righteous Mother Superior and the exuberant Dolores at the heart of the show which provided an emotional connection to the audience. Dolores conveyed well the gradual melting of her go-getting showgirl exterior to reveal a kinder caring person inside while sustaining the gutsy vocals.
The seven piece unseen band provided a good solid backing to the big numbers like “Take me to heaven” and “Raise your voice”, but a quieter support to the delightful “Here within these walls” and “The life I never led” which were equally enjoyable and moving solo numbers.Another very good show from Shinfield Players with everybody looking Fabulous, baby and making you feel that it was indeed good to be a nun. By the end you simply want to raise your voice and rejoice at watching these Sisters Act. It was a pleasure to Bless your show.
