Sister Act

It is always enjoyable to visit with WLOS and watch a society delivering such a consistently high level of entertainment. Originally scheduled for May 2020, it was especially pleasing to see that Sister Act had merely been ‘in hibernation’ and hadn’t been cancelled entirely.

Sister Act, the musical, is based on the 1992 Whoopi Goldberg film and tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier - an aspiring disco diva in the 1970’s. Having witnessing her gangster boyfriend, Curtis, commit a murder Deloris is put in protective custody in a convent. Finding this new lifestyle difficult, she is eventually told to join the convent choir and finds friendships and sisterhood that she had never known before...

Congratulations must first go to Jamie Miller-Hughes who, as Director, was responsible for the overall success of Sister Act. This was a hugely ambitious project and one that had clearly demanded extensive time and effort to both organise and manage.  Attention to detail was obvious and this can only be achieved through commitment, dedication and hours of rehearsal time. After such a long wait it must have been very pleasing to finally see all your hard work come together onstage.

The ensemble cast gave a very strong performance and it was a nice touch that they were all given their own character(s) to play, even if they had a non-speaking role.  The nuns collectively gave a very strong vocal performance and demonstrated excellent harmonies. ‘Raise Your Voice’ was a real showstopper! The entire cast worked well together and the whole-company numbers were full of energy, pace and enjoyment. Once again, the WLOS Featured Dancers brought their quality and polished skills to the stage. 

Congratulations once again to WLOS, the entire cast, production team and backstage crew. This was another excellent show and a fabulous way to announce your return. I look forward to visiting in October for your production of Calendar Girls.
