A musical adaptation of the iconic 1977 movie strutted into Woodley as the senior youth group brought Saturday Night Fever to the stage. After months of uncertainty when Storm Eunice damaged the theatre roof meaning that the group had to rehearse and perform in a different venue, I was pleased to be able to see both casts perform. It was lovely to see the young people up on stage enjoying performing, some for the first time. I was very impressed by the quality of the singing and dancing performances and the characterisation in their acting. Some of the principal’s performances were excellent and would rival an adult society. The principals and ensemble worked together cohesively and they were clearly loving being on stage,
The director had incorporated the use of physical theatre which brought a 1970’s production up to date and was used very effectively in the suicide scene which was very well managed. The musical director had added step forward solos in the scene changes giving more of the group the chance to have a solo. The singing was led by a small live band which for a couple of the numbers was supplemented by instrumental tracks to give a more disco feel. The choreography was bright and engaging and the cast had been well trained, and performed with great energy. The routines were simple but effective and made good use of repeated patterns which were extremely effective.
