Lilies on the Land
Shinfield Players Theatre, SPT
A welcome return to their January Panto slot found Argosy choosing an unusual example of the Grimm Brothers' storytelling involving the ability (or not) to turn straw into gold - and the lies told about it (I had to look it up on Wikipedia). Happily, Chairman Phil Gossan knew all about it and adapted the story to Argosy's needs, with fine support from costume and scenic departments, to include all the usual panto characters and lots of song and dance. Superb portrayals of the King, the Prince and his beloved and the leading liar (himself). But it took all the Fairy Queen's magic to rescue them from the brilliantly evil Rumpelstiltskin who could change straw into gold - but at a terrible price.
