A Midsummer Night's Dream

It was a pleasure to once again return to Cannizaro Park for another visit, this time for an evening performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The warm summer air, capacity audience, and beautiful surroundings provided an ideal backdrop for open air theatre, adding to the assured, easy atmosphere that MTC consistently brings to each Shakespeare production.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of Shakespeare’s lightest and most imaginative comedies, weaving together nobles, young lovers, a troupe of eager amateur actors and a mischievous fairy world. It’s a play powered by the characters’ clashes, misunderstandings and the disorder that follows.

Benjamin Chamberlain (Director) delivered an outstanding production that was driven by a superb cast whose acting was both precise and faultless. The lighting and overall atmosphere were idyllic, perfectly complementing the play’s magical tone. The use of hand‑puppet fairies was quite simply mesmerising and added a playful charm that delighted the audience. Using the entire performance space, rather than relying solely on the central stage, created movement and visual interest from every angle. With excellent audience interaction and one of the most entertaining bows and finales ever witnessed, the evening was genuinely joyful and memorable.

Congratulations once again to everyone at Mayhem Theatre Company and those directly involved in A Midsummer Night's Dream. This was another excellent Shakespeare production and a thoroughly enjoyable evening. It was a delightful reminder of how special open‑air theatre can be when a talented cast, creative production team and a lovely setting come together for a performance!
