Lilies on the Land
Shinfield Players Theatre, SPT
Neil Simon’s New York comedy which he adapted for Chichester in 1990, with the Ayckbourn-like idea of a party where neither host nor hostess appears and the even more brilliant coup-de-theatre ending (both managed well) rather faltered in the middle since his characters were provided with physical injuries (to facilitate a running Doctor joke) rather than characteristics and resisted most efforts of the experienced cast to give them the believability which would have made their antics truly funny.
