Rock of Ages is a jukebox musical with rock songs from the Glam Rock era of the 1980s. As always, the cast of Reading Operatic Society threw themselves wholeheartedly into this musical, performing with huge energy, and capturing the spirit of the show. This group works very naturally together with obvious pleasure and great camaraderie.
This is a big brash and slightly self-indulgent musical and under Lloyd’s’s direction there was lots of energy and enthusiasm from cast who formed a close-knit acting team with no weak links. Lloyd had worked with the cast on their characterisations which were great and, in some cases, a little tongue in cheek and suitably a little over the top.
The songs in this musical are not ones you can be half hearted about, and everyone threw themselves into the performance with enormous energy. Unfortunately, on the night I saw the show, there were sound issues from start with the voices being amplified to the point of becoming distorted at and it was difficult to hear the band over the singers in the louder songs. All that being said, the singers did really well, and the show rocked its way from start to finish with pace and obvious enjoyment. The choreography was excellent, with jazz and contemporary styles. It was clear that a huge amount of hard work and dedication had gone into the choreographic elements, style and portrayal and there was no holding back from the raunchier aspects of the movement in the strip club and the dancers were completely in sync with each other.
The costumes, hair and wigs were great and authentic for the 1980’s and I loved the attention to detail with lots of rock band style. What a great time you all had rocking the night away!
