Thank you for the invitation to review Radiant Vermin and for making me feel so welcome.
This dark comedy is a three hander, which takes the audience into a Faustian world asking, “Just how far would you go to get your dream home?” It was clear that all three actors had excellent chemistry and worked well together. It was fast moving but the actors were able to convey a complicated plot with clarity. The two leads worked exceptionally well together, moving through the quickfire scenes without missing a beat. They managed to maintain our sympathy even when they were planning and executing heinous crimes. They portrayed multiple characters with increasingly fast-paced delivery whilst managing to keep each of the characters clearly defined and the dialogue clear; no mean feat!! The director had clearly worked hard with the actors to create excellent characters and relationships. The play demands two styles, onstage fast-paced interactions between the actors interspersed with breaking the fourth wall for the actors to collude with the audience. The direction was tight and the choreography of these changes of style, seamless and it is a testament to the skill of the two lead actors that they managed this so well.
The white set was simple and effective with different levels enhanced with clever lighting effects which gave an acting space full of potential. The absence of a complicated set was clever because we don’t need to see the dream home instead, we rely on the skill of the actors to feed our imagination. This was an excellent production and one that the team should be proud of.
