What a pleasure it was to be back in a theatre for a production as part of a live audience watching people doing what they love, performing on stage. As the restrictions have eased slowly, the challenge is what to stage and a musical revue is an obvious answer allowing self-rehearsal of elements and social distancing. Martin Butler has come up a with a clever modern twist to frame the show by combining the TV show Googlebox with a Jukebox Karaoke.
It was a good musical selection of songs with a wide range of shows from the wonderful old American musicals through to much more recent modern ones which would be new to many in the audience. It was also great to see a good range of experience be given their chance on stage to encourage newcomers and reward the long-standing members and several shone out with great performances and strong stage presence. The highlights were I can hear the Bells from Hairspray, Reviewing the situation from Oliver, Happy Talk from South Pacific and Wouldn't it be lovely from My Fair Lady.
You could sense the pleasure in the audience , in Front of House and on stage to be back in a live theatre and it made an enjoyable night out with the added bonus of being for an NHS charity. The performances promise better things to come when rehearsal and social distancing allows the preparation of a full show.
