It was a pleasure as always to visit Progress Theatre this time for the first of the new season’s plays, Jeeves and Wooster in Perfect Nonsense and I was made to feel very welcome by the front of house team. This was a madcap play, performed by just three actors who worked brilliantly together keeping up a frenetic pace of action and thoroughly entertained the audience.
Over the course of nearly two hours Jeeves and Seppings who is roped in to help with the proceedings rush from role to role between them playing ten characters. This they do with energy and resourcefulness, as they try to keep up with Bertie’s recounting of his crazy adventures. All three actors had great characterisation and expressions with brilliant comic timing.
The director gave us a show which was boisterous and exuberant, and I imagine that she had a lot of fun with it? It was fast paced and cleverly constructed, and the action was complex, energetic, and very well blocked. She had clearly worked hard with the actors to understand and develop each of their characters and built a great camaraderie between the three of them such that they all gave brilliant performances. The set, props and costumes were all very well-conceived and imaginative beautifully enhancing the productions.
This production was such fun and had us laughing out loud and exhausted by the frenetic energy on stage. Well done!
