Thank you for inviting me to your production of Gagarin Way, a sharp political drama written by Gregory Burke. Set in Fife, the play is about a kidnapping which is intended as a political statement but ends up going horribly wrong when the wrong man is kidnapped, and the situation escalates. It is a thought-provoking and gritty play which presents the audience with four cleverly observed characters; each deeply different to the others but intricately interwoven together. Although the play is described as a sharp and violent political drama, it is also darkly humorous with some comedic moments within it.
This production was full of on-stage tension with each of the four actors giving strong and compelling performances. Their interaction was very natural and the differences in their political beliefs gave their characters a depth which became more apparent as their complicated relationships played out.
This was clearly a passion project for director and under her direction, the cast developed deep and strong relationships which were very natural. Their dialogue powered throughout the play creating tension and anticipation for what was coming. Contrasted with this, the dark humour came out with some laugh-out-loud moments. I was impressed with the Scottish accents, each slightly different, but maintained throughout. This tense and powerful play was done without an interval, but the 90 minutes flew by, which is testament to the skill of the actors and creative team.
