The musical version of Fame is based on the film of the same name and is set in the High School for Performing Arts in New York, with a new intake of young hopefuls. Although there are lead performers, this is very much an ensemble piece so that everyone got their chance to shine. The group performed their hearts out singing, dancing and acting together and clearly having a lot of fun doing so.
This was the director’s debut, having only just left the group himself, but he did a very good job working with this group of youngsters. Under his direction their characterisations were portrayed well and they had developed the story very well some lovely comedic moments. He handled the more serious aspects of the story with dignity and care creating some very touching moments. There was very good use of the multi-level staging for both the acting and for some Carmen’s big solo numbers, which was very impactful. The choreographed routines which included many different varieties of dance from ballet to more contemporary were very well danced and all the cast exuded enthusiasm looking confident and comfortable with the dancing.
What I love about Starmaker is that the MD gives everyone the chance to sing, whether it be a solo or to sing in a small group, and this gives the young people the confidence to develop their musical theatre skills going forward, and to become familiar with live performance including a band.
