This was a challenging, bitter-sweet play which dealt with some difficult and emotional issues, but the cast had clearly worked very hard with the directors to deliver their parts and to develop their characters. Although wordy, the director moved the action along with pace and the cast’s delivery of throwaway comedy lines, recriminations, anger and hurt were all brilliantly delivered. The leading actress portrayed the part of grieving widow Grace with a mix of vulnerability, a natural authority and simmering resentment. She was particularly deft at handling the pathos and anger towards her sister with some cutting, barbed and very funny jibes. The unhappiness and heartache caused by her sister Ruth’s admission to an affair with her husband and subsequent birth of a son was very sensitively handled and the scene where daughter Jo mediated between her mother and aunt was extremely powerful.
Each of the characters had their own ‘back story’, which the actors communicated very well and gave the audience much to ponder over as they developed their character portrayals through the play. The director was fortunate in having such a strong cast of confident actors to play these complex roles and they worked extremely well together to deliver the play.
