It was a joy to see so many youngsters on the Shinfield stage enjoying performing and lovely to see how much they had all grown in confidence since their performance of Treasure Island last year. ‘Dream On’ was a modern adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s dream and a great way to introduce the youngsters to Shakespeare.

The directing team had clearly spent time with the actors working on their emotional reactions to the situations, and everyone was believably involved and responded well to one another with some super acting. There were some stand out performances and there is a lot of potential in the group for the future. All in all, the cast did a great job, building on what they had learnt over the year, and they should be proud of what they achieved.

There were a wide variety of attractive and effective costumes, with super contrasts between the Athenians, the fairies and the mechanicals. The fairies brought a lovely splash of colour in their tutus each matched to their flower or elements of nature. The Athenians looked fine in their tunics and the use of waistcoats for the actors was fitting for them and marked them as workers. There was good use of all the acting space, and the multiple entrances and exits added to the interest.

Congratulations to all the youth group members on your performances today. Have a lovely summer and I look forward to joining you for your next production.
