Thank you for inviting me to your production of Dark Sublime which I really enjoyed. It was a new play to me, which was set both in the present and the past with scenes from a lost episode of the Sci Fi series Dark Sublime.
The actors each played two parts, in the main in the current day, but each also had a role in Dark Sublime. The play was well cast with good characterisation and interaction from the five actors who were confident in their roles. It is quite a long play, but the actors maintained their energy and flow holding our attention.
Two main themes that the director had clearly worked hard on developing were the different emotional journeys of same sex couples 4 decades apart and the fantasy elements of the Sci Fi series and it’s impact on the play’s characters, particularly it's leading lady and her 'super fan'. The actors worked hard on their relationships and emotional journeys in the present and clearly enjoyed their time in the parallel universe of Dark Sublime taking us back to times gone by.
The Director cleverly managed the juxtaposition of the now and the past by using a single box set with 4 different acting spaces meaning that there were no set changes to slow the action. I was also impressed to know that the haunting Dark Sublime theme tune had been composed by the sound technician.
