It was a great pleasure to join Starmaker for their production of ‘Cry Baby’ a high school 1950’s rock ‘n’ roll musicalbased on the 1990 film of the same name. The musical has a flavour of Romeo and Juliet follows two groups of teens: The Drapes a group of rebellious delinquents and the squeaky-clean, uptight Squares. It tells the story of a straight-laced girl who falls for the bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks. The musical is full of clever lyrics, and rocking music, which the group performed brilliantly.

There were some standout performances from the principles, full of energy and delivered with high-intensity and great character work. All of the youth group members gave great singing performances, and it was clear that the group were having a brilliant time on stage. Under the direction of the youth group leaders, they had developed good contrasts between the unhip Squares and the delinquent Drapes and also delivered the quirky campness and comedy of the clever lyrics. The choreography was good throughout with some lovely dance sequences which complimented the 1950’s musical style well. The dance routines were engaging, and the cast had been well trained, so that their movements were energetic and well synchronised.
