Carousel

It is always a pleasure to visit with TOPS and, on this occasion, to enjoy their production of the Carousel. Written by Rogers and Hammerstein, and first performed in 1945, many companies are quick to dismiss it as being somewhat dated. To me, Carousel is a wonderful musical full of many memorable songs and possesses an ability to charm any audience. I was pleased to read in the programme that this was actually the fourth time TOPS has staged Carousel since 1970. Let’s hope that this continues to be the case…

The musical centres on the story of fairground worker Billy Bigelow and his love affair with Julie Jordan.  Their troubled romance doesn’t go well and after having lost his job as a carousel ‘barker’ Billy becomes depressed and bitter. Following Julie’s announcement that she was pregnant, hope appeared for their rocky marriage – but would things change for the better?

TJ Lloyd is once again to be congratulated as Director. Marking his 10-year anniversary with TOPS, this was a fabulous production and a resounding success. From start to finish the amount of time, effort and dedication to detail were obvious to see. The excellent back projection enhanced every scene allowing maximum space onstage for a truly quality cast. The whole production was slick, pacey and hugely entertaining.

Whilst the principals enjoy ‘the limelight’, it is important to recognise the energy, commitment and quality demonstrated by the entire cast. There was excellent support throughout with quality vocals, harmonies and dancing/movement on display. There was also a genuine look of enjoyment of all those performing.
