I was delighted to review this joint youth and adult production of Babe the Sheep Pig at Progress Theatre which I enjoyed immensely. It was lovely to see the youth members on stage with experienced adult actors which I’m sure was an enjoyable experience for all involved and will have given the youngsters confidence and self-belief.

It was extremely well cast and well directed with some excellent. The principals had excellent characterisation and were very believable. They had clear diction and lively dialogue which drew the audience into the story. They worked very well together enhancing each other’s performances. The puppies and sheep were played by four members of the youth group and were an absolute delight moving energetically around the stage. They gelled well as a group and bounced their dialogue off one another brilliantly. The five actors in the ensemble were kept busy playing many parts which they did with great skill changing character effectively for each part.

The simple single set worked very well. The floor and walls had been cleverly painted to look like a farmyard and were very effective. The costumes were excellent and very well chosen to suit each character. There was a lot of attention to detail. I particularly like the animal head pieces which had been individually hand crafted and were very effective.

The directors had clearly worked extremely hard with the cast on their characterisations, interactions and movement to create a most enjoyable piece of theatre.
