A Night at the Oscars! The glitz and the glamour! I pulled on my dinner jacket and made my way to Banbury, not knowing quite what to expect. Would there be a red carpet fringed with paparazzi? Would the quality of the entertainment live up to the hype? Or would the evening prove to be a procession of mediocre performers introduced by faded stars with the whole thing barely held together by a few feeble jokes?
Some might argue that the actual Oscars ceremony has become just that, but in any event I needn’t have worried. There was a red carpet, although thankfully no paparazzi. There weren’t, in fact, any awards being handed out; the Oscars theme was to provide some structure to the programme, with sections based on music from Oscar nominated and winning films in the Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Original Song and Best Picture categories.
The Society would normally stage a concert in the autumn, but following the cancellation of two spring shows there was a determination to put on a more theatrical experience this year. In truth, some of the musical numbers presented had at least as much polish as one of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ little statuettes, and the production effectively showcased the depth of talent the Society has at its disposal.
