I was really looking forward to this production, and was not disappointed. Based on the story and screenplay by Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks it was bound to be a winner. This piece was a hilarious take on the horror story and Rhyl & District MTC surmounted many set backs to get this show on stage. All was well on the night I attended and the company must be congratulated on their ‘Teamwork’ with this offering.
The cast were all very experienced players and came up with the goods to make this a very entertaining evening. The set was minimalistic to say the least and much was left to the imagination, as stage crew dealt swiftly with scene changes throughout the show.
George Kelly was cast as Frederick Frankenstein, grandson of the horrific mad scientist, Victor Frankenstein. His interpretation of the role was awe inspiring to say the least. He was hardly ever off stage, and his first musical number with the students ‘The Brain’ put his seal on the portrayal of this character. The tunes throughout the piece were catchy and George’s theatrical experience was paramount in the success of this musical. He led the Company in many chorus numbers and his Soliloquy in Act 2 was memorable.
Jane Crinigan pulled out all the stops in her characterisation of Igor, the humpbacked grandson of late Victor’s henchman. She extracted the comedy from the script and score to the delight of the audience.
Carol Williams rose to the occasion with a superb portrayal of the mysterious and dour violin playing Frau Blucher. As well as maintaining her character throughout her rendition of ‘He Vas My Boyfriend’ was a triumph.
Newcomer to the Company, Clare Thomas as Frederick’s fiancée Elizabeth Benning brought glamour to the proceedings with her ‘Please Don’t Touch Me’.
Olivia Gordon gave us a wonderful performance as Inga the yodelling lab assistant. She was joined by Frederick and Igor for a ‘Roll in the Hay’.
Lori Hayes was perfectly cast in the cameo role of Hermit whilst Chris Ensall as Monster and Garry Clements as Inspector Kemp completed the cast.
The Ensemble/Chorus were well rehearsed with stunning Choreography from Gail Astle and Lisa Tudball with Frederick leading the company in ‘Transylvania Mania’ and the glitzy tap number ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’ -fabulous!!
The whole company received a well-deserved standing ovation, which turned out to be an excellent choice of production. Thank you so much Rhyl & District MTC for your invitation once again.
