Unless of a certain age or familiar with 20th century Spanish history, it is difficult for some to appreciate the stifling conservative and patriarchal values which pervaded especially rural Spain. Lorca’s classic piece, which may have cost him his life, is therefore a difficult sell almost 100 years after its first production. Bob Hope Theatre gave it a fair go, although demands made upon the audience were not insignificant, engaged as it was with some excellent performances.
