This production was performed to commemorate the centenary of the birth of the play’s author R.F. Delderfield. Its premier amateur production was staged in Exmouth so it is very special to this company. We had a dramatic start to the evening as the audience was given a taste of what it was like to be in the middle of an air raid with sound and lighting effects. This director pays attention to detail, a fact that is always appreciated by the cast. The Set was well constructed and decorated to suit the era and the cast clearly felt at home on it. Pop, had a northern accent which did not falter and he had a very good sense of comedy. His constant need for matches and the phone calls to his wife were highly amusing. When you are playing the villain of the piece you can judge your performance on how much the audience dislike you. Sidney gave a very convincing performance and we were all delighted when he was thrown off the set in the final scene. It was lovely to see some new young faces in the cast. The part of Mark was confidently played and looked every inch the young, handsome, would be RAF officer. Bella was charming and portrayed her naivety and courage at the end to perfection. Porter was played by a new young performer and gave a performance well beyond his 15 years. He was ably supported by Taffy. The “Duke” was very cool and Mr. Bounty was a very warm character. Mrs. Bounty was very confident and played both the domineering side of her character and the contrasting more subservient side very convincingly. A commanding S/Ldr. Briarly and the down trodden servant Thelma completed the cast. The play aptly ended with the cast singing 'Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye', a personal touch, one of many added by the director. This was a thoughtful and convincing performance and the end result was well worth all the effort.
