Any observation made by the reviewer can only be based on what he sees at the performance in

The N.O.D.A. Representative’s intention is to give an objective critique of the overall production and in
particular the performance viewed. It should be remembered that any review of this nature can only
be objective as far as the techniques used during the performance observed. Any criticisms
expressed may not have been valid at other performances, and are only made to encourage higher
standards in Amateur Theatre.
It is hoped that the audience’s appreciation of your efforts will have given everyone a lift and
encouraged you to greater achievements in the future and that the observations made by the reviewer
will prove helpful in improving future productions.

My first visit to see a Bath Theatre School production was on the last sell-out day of
the run, in very hot weather in a theatre without any climate control. So a hot ticket in
so many ways! I was not to be disappointed!
I had not seen a stage production of the famous animated film before. It just needed
the addition of young talent to make the mix complete. All the scenery, costumes and
props were also supplied within the Disney package and all sprinkled with the
necessary magic dust. I would also add, with great respect, that it needed the huge
help from loving parents back stage, on stage and in front of house. They filled all
the gaps for help and supervision which made these shows achievable. Their
assistance was priceless! Many parents were also responsible for the very loud and
heavy applause that followed many songs especially those that focussed on solo
performances.
The whole of the stage was used for performing. There was a complete back wall
projection screen matched by two narrow screens at each side of the stage. The
often moving projections were slick colourful and timed to the running of the story.
Any addition scenery or large props were wheeled in and out by the stage crew.
Everything was timed beautifully. In the second act we even had falling “snow”. From
the presentation side everything was ideal.
Despite the quality of the visual package the heart of the show was decided by the
excellent standard of the young cast. Every note of music heard, every step of dance
made, we were watching a very well rehearsed team. Everything in tune, in the beat
of the music, in chorus or solo work – everyone moving as one person. Quite
amazing! It seems almost unfair to mention the solo performances especially as
they were all supported well by the rest of the cast.

Firstly I’ll mention the charming young Elsa and Anna played by Clara and Carys.
Those two set the level for on-stage energy and cuteness. Well done. The older
versions played by Beth and Emmeline really owned their songs and costumes.
Emily brought so much life to the snowman and was always in character. Mention
must also go to Hamish inside the giant Sven. I wondered just how much weight he
lost in that sauna of a costume! But I just thought Jude playing Kristoff came out as
favourite. He had a very good singing voice and a super expressive face. And never
overplayed a scene. Well done Jude.
This was a well directed, well paced total showcase for the school and it’s members.
In that manner I suppose it was a good choice. But these were talented youngsters
and part of me keenly wanted to see the pupils perform in a less packaged show. I
wanted to see more of what they could produce themselves live on stage where we
could see what they could achieve without being inclosed in such prescriptive
characters.
