Before attending The Attic Players performance of Woman in Mind, I had never been fortunate enough to watch an Alan Ayckbourn play, however from entering the Attic Theatre auditorium this company certainly had set the scene. Melanie Davies played the part of Susan outstandingly and it was obviously a role which she most certainly dedicated her entire self to. Her humour and insight on stage was extremely impressive. Martyn Buck played the role of Bill the doctor and his humour and characterisation was very good. Roger Smith as Gerald and Jenni Steer as Murial played great roles working the stage and audience well. Susan’s estranged son Ricky was played convincingly by Ben Allen. Alan Waterman as Andy, Neil James as Tony and Helen Whiteland as Lucy all performed brilliantly as Susan’s fantasy family.
A big mention must go to Justine Dodd who directed this wonderful piece of theatre. For 30 years she has wanted to direct Woman in Mind and she finally managed to stage it at Attic Theatre and all of her passion and the desire to direct this piece was extremely apparent from the atmosphere in the theatre and the outstanding performance from the cast.
I feel that I must also mention Branwen Munn who did an outstanding job producing the lighting plots, sound clips and also the projection which enhanced each scene. I feel the projection worked extremely well and is certainly a cost effective way of giving your patrons a believable and realistic set.
The set was designed, painted and built by members of the society and I was extremely impressed to see props used to give more depth to the scenes.
