The directors had worked hard with this group of 21 youngsters to bring this iconic story to the stage. The principals had been well cast and gave very good performances with bags of character. They were vocally very strong and delivered their songs with confidence, musicality and in character. The Wizard of Oz is full of familiar songs that we remember from our childhood, and these were well delivered with the lyrics clearly enunciated so that we could hear every word in the songs. There were also some very good American accents on show, which the cast maintained throughout adding to the flavour of the Kansas location. The ensemble was kept busy and the directors had given them all lots to do with plenty of opportunity to develop their acting and singing skills and to gain confidence on stage. The choreography was well designed with repeated patterns and made sure that the whole cast were involved. The cast danced with lots of energy and the dances were fun to watch and brought a smile to the audiences faces.
There some very creative props for this production including wonderful tall sweetcorn plants and crocheted apples. Cardboard tiles had been painted with yellow brick patterns and were held by the cast who moved across the stage for the yellow brick road to give a wonderful effect during the song “Follow the Yellow Brick Road”.
Overall, it was clear that everyone was having a lot of fun on stage performing in this show and that is what it is all about.
