It was a delight to watch such a wonderful play as “Witness for the Prosecution” performed to such a high standard. The set was done well with an authentic depiction of an actual court room complete with benches, dock and coat of arms. It is impressive what can be achieved in a small theatre!
The acting was very convincing, with nothing left to chance: everyone played their part well, I won’t name anyone personally as all were outstanding from the largest to the smallest part.
The costumes were excellent and within the period, although possible Leonard’s suit was a little too modern?
The timing was perfect (so essential in this play) alongside some very good accents.
Leonard Vole was an enigma from the outset. For those who didn’t know the plot, there was a genuine dilemma as to his innocence or guilt. Alternating between charm and smarm, between disingenuousness and deceit, this was splendid portrayal.
His wife Romain came over as a nasty piece of work who betrayed him in the witness box or did she? Another great performance.
Janet Mackenzie had a glorious accent and came over well as the typical nosey body!
Mr Myers Q.C. for the prosecution had a habit, when beginning to question, of clearing his throat that helped form his character and in some ways made him endearing although not to Sir Wilfred Robarts, Q.C. who made an excellent Defence Counsel and whose timing was superb. Mr Justice Wainwright looking down on proceedings from his bench had the authority of an experienced and somewhat world-weary archetypal judge of the old school, looking dispassionately down on the drama happening before him.
All the other parts were played well, a huge support to the main roles and acted with great skill.
“Witness for the Prosecution” one of Agatha Christies cleverest stories, as performed by the Amateur Players of Sherborne had it all, pace, atmosphere and good casting
This was a performance of such a high standard that it deserved a certificate of Excellence! Huge congratulations to the Director John Crabtree and all involved in this production.
My thanks for inviting me to witness such a wonderful performance in such a great little theatre
