It made a refreshing change to see Wind in the Willows in the musical version, with Honiton Community Theatre Company making a splendid effort with their production, it was colourful, witty and not overdone, as it could easily turn into pantomime. There were some great touches with a boat, caravan, train, and other such impressive props.
The changes of scenes were expertly done with ease and hardly noticeable as the costumed cast were also the “scene shifters” and therefore it all became part of the performance All credit to the back stage and the scenery crews for their clever use of what were, essentially a series of boxes.
The depiction of Badger’s and Mole’s homes was splendidly achieved.
There was some really imaginative lighting especially with the very amusing hedgehogs trying to cross the road and avoid the cars.
Ratty was portrayed just right. His stance and movements were spot on; an excellent pairing with the beautifully characterised Mole whose singing was superb
Toad was impressive as soon as he came on stage and leapt about with great enthusiasm. His speaking voice could have been a bit more upper crust at times, but he certainly commanded the stage whenever he appeared. He had some quite difficult songs but sang them well and with ease.
Badger gave a superb performance, great hair do that instantly identified his character, and a deep, strong voice that gave him his obvious authority
Chief Weasel did a super job, a menacing and nasty character
Mrs Otter came over as a motherly wholesome character that was just right. Great walk and gestures with a lovely accent and some very nice singing.
The harmonising was very good, everyone played their parts well giving each animal (and occasional human) an individual character, helped by some excellent costumes.
Congratulations to the MD, the band sounded brilliant and not intrusive from where they were placed, and every word from the cast could be heard.
The choreography was good, the dancers performed well and were a delight to watch.
With this kind of show you have to have a strong chorus and that was clearly evident. The staging and use of space was well done, Congratulations to the Director on a job well done. A true Community performance bringing together all the generations, and putting on a really enjoyable show which deservedly played to full houses.
