Last time I saw "Whistle Down the Wind" was the professional production on the London stage, of course that was over twenty years ago. Not an easy show to undertake, butr it was tackled with great enthusiasm from both cast and production team. I was amazed how well the Society adapted the show with their very limited facilities, both on stage and off.
A story of a family who have recently lost their mother, and their father Boone (John Fisher) is struggling to bring up three children on his own. Swallow (Lauren Middleton) his eldest daughter with a beautiful soprano voice, her sister Brat (Katie-Mae Ramsey) and her small brother Poor Baby (Lyndon Barclay) gave excellent portrayals of their characters. The children rescue three kittens that had unfortunely been left to drown in the river, and decide to raise them in the barn. That is where they find "The Man" (Richard Shingleton) an escaped fugitive, and they mistakenly believe he is Jesus. A consummate portrayal of his character, and with a good strong voice he made the role his own. Swallow befriends him and looks after him along with all the children in the village. The cast of eighteen enthusiastic youngsters, sang all the wonderful well known music beautifully. The children were a delight to listen to and presented themselves extremely well, showing great promise for the future. Good backing from the chorus, but of course, the townsfolk eventually catch up with the fugitive and he sets fire to the barn and himself, leading to quite a spectacular finish. Congratulations to all involved.
