Calendar Girls - The Musical

Written by Tim Firth with music by Gary Barlow, “Calendar Girls - The Musical” is a heartwarming story about a close-knit group of Yorkshire women who come together to support a charitable cause following the loss of a dear friend’s husband. Through an ambitious and unconventional fundraising idea, they discover newfound confidence, strengthen their friendships, and prove that ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference. Filled with humour, emotion and community spirit, the musical celebrates resilience, compassion and the power of friendship.

It takes a brave company to tackle “Calendar Girls - The Musical”.  It is a show that asks its cast to balance humour, heartbreak, friendship and community spirit, all while telling a story that is deeply rooted in Yorkshire. Lindley Theatre Company's production at Slaithwaite Civic Hall achieved exactly that, delivering an evening that felt warm, genuine and full of heart.

Before the curtain even rose, audience members were greeted by the wonderfully named Clarkey's Bar, a lovely touch that immediately connected the venue to one of the story's most important families and helped create a welcoming atmosphere. Given the incredibly warm weather, it was also a much needed place to gather before the performance and during the interval.

At the centre of the production was Angela Fisher as Annie Clarke. She carried the emotional core of the story with confidence and sincerity, giving a performance that felt authentic and engaging throughout. Alongside her, John Fisher as John Clarke brought real warmth and tenderness to the role. Knowing that the pair are husband and wife in real life only added to the emotional impact of their scenes together, making some of the show's most poignant moments particularly touching.

Hayley Taylor's Chris provided much of the show's energy and humour. She had a natural comic touch and created a character full of personality. Charlotte Bamford's Cora was another strong performance, bringing confidence and experience to a role she clearly understands well. Claire Fielding's Ruth was a standout, delivering excellent character work throughout and a superb solo number that showcased both vocal ability and strong physical comedy. Michelle Bates was the perfect cougar embracing Celia's larger than life qualities with confidence, while Loretta Scott's Jessie combined toughness, warmth and excellent comic timing.

I must say the girls handled the daunting photoshoot with great confidence and looked like they were having a ball. Experiences like this are very rarely forgotten.

Supporting the central group, Noreen Armitage's Marie was dependable throughout, while Richard Corbett's Lawrence, which I always feel is an underappreciated role, was solid in helping the story move forward, delivering a believable performance. Toby Kershaw's Danny and Hayden Baker's Tommo shared an enjoyable stage chemistry, creating a believable friendship that added another layer of charm to the production. Scarlette Robshaw's Jennie was assured and grounded, helping anchor some of the scenes with genuine quick wit.

The ensemble made a valuable contribution to the production's success. Tim Guest brought genuine warmth to Rod, while Ian Roberts, Graeme Hemmingway, Trudy Dawson, Christina Jagger and Margaret Murray all helped populate the Yorkshire community that sits at the heart of the show. Particular mention should go to Jackie Render and Lynne Silcock, whose appearances as the Miss Wilson’s generated plenty of laughter and added some memorable comic moments.

Behind the scenes, the production team deserves significant credit. Director Dean Patrick clearly understood the balance required between comedy and emotion. His staging made excellent use of the Civic Hall space, scenes moved efficiently, and the production maintained a strong sense of pace throughout. Most importantly, he succeeded in drawing believable performances from his cast and demonstrated that quality musical theatre can thrive in all corners of Yorkshire. Assistant Director and Choreographer Christina Jagger provided routines that enhanced the production without distracting from the story's emotional weight.

Musically, Laura Glaholm's work as Musical Director was particularly impressive. The ensemble harmonies sounded tight and confident, especially in the larger company numbers where the sense of Yorkshire community truly came alive. There were several moments where the singing genuinely raised goosebumps, which is exactly what this show demands.

Technical elements were equally strong. CS Technical UK delivered excellent sound and lighting, ensuring dialogue was clear and key moments were properly supported. The technical team helped create the atmosphere the story required without ever drawing attention away from the performers.

As with any successful theatre production, a huge amount happens beyond what the audience sees. Stage Managers Abbie Lloyd and Genevieve Shaw, Stage Assistant Fern Longmuir, and the front of house team of Don Jagger, Patricia Mayfield, Abbie Palmer, Grace Hawkes and Pauline Hirons all played their part in ensuring the evening ran smoothly and professionally.

This was not a professional production, nor did it try to be. What Lindley Theatre Company delivered was something arguably more valuable: a sincere, heartfelt and thoroughly enjoyable community performance that celebrated friendship, resilience and Yorkshire spirit. In a very warm Slaithwaite Civic Hall, the company created an equally warm experience for its audience, proving once again why “Calendar Girls The Musical” continues to resonate so strongly with local communities. It was an evening full of laughter, emotion and genuine affection, performed by a company clearly committed to telling this much loved story well.
