When you go to see “Centre Stage” you know you are going to have a great evening as their reputation goes before them, and so it proved in their latest production. I must confess I have not seen the musical before, but remember the film; the English version with Hayley Mills, set in the north of England.
The stage show is set in America, but is true to the original story and concept written by Mary Hayley Bell. Centre Stage put everything into it, the set was extremely good, realistic and versatile and the change overs done with great skill and were seamless.
As for the skill of the director; Helen Rushton did it with style. The way the groupings were done was good, and the way the youngsters acted and portrayed the emotion of the characters was with a maturity beyond their years.
The minister was very convincing and played the part well. Swallow portrayed the part with the conviction and sensitivity required for this role and had a great voice. The Man gave a wonderful performance with the light and shade required for this challenging part putting such feeling into the songs, some quite demanding to sing and with a very broad range. A role handled with confidence and great maturity. Amos, Candy, The Sherriff, Poor Baby, Boone, Brat all sang and acted so well, it was all of such a high standard that made the show even more enjoyable.
The Choreography had just the right touch for this production .Congratulations to Rachel. The costumes complimented the show, ably done by Sue Bonnett.
The Orchestra had a really good sound, so well conducted by Musical Director Ian Crew. A special mention must go to the small children who played Kathy, Charles, Dotty and Nancy; they were a joy to watch and their enthusiasm and commitment bodes well for the future of Centre Stage. I cannot wait to see their next show. Once more, congratulations to all concerned.
