~~I enjoyed this J.B. Priestley's farce directed by Jenny Green, the set is very good and the play is costumed very well. Set in Edwardian Yorkshire there are 3 couples: the Helliwells, the Parkers and the Soppitt’s that all married on the same day 25 years ago. They have all got on well in life and become well liked in their local community. They decide to have a little party at the Helliwells to celebrate their anniversary.
Before the party Joe Helliwell (David Balfour), Albert Parker (Richard Barnett) and Herbert Soppitt (John Gardner) feel they need to fire their new local organist, Gerald Forbes (Sam Short) as he has been seen out with a local girl.
While they are talking to him he reveals that the temporary vicar who had been at the church at the time of their weddings had not been properly licensed and the weddings he'd performed were not recognised in law. This is where the fun begins not wanting the news to get out they bribe Forbes to keep quiet and he can keep his job. They decide to not say anything to their wives until they think of something.
Unfortunately the conversation was heard by the Helliwells’ alcoholic housekeeper, Mrs Northrop excellently played by (Sarah Short) and she tells the wives before leaving the house for the local pub as she has been sacked that evening. There are some very funny moments.
The wives are shocked at first but also start to think it could be a good thing, as they look at their relationships. They are all played very well by Maria Helliwell (Fiona Crosswaite Eyre), Annie Parker (Julie Gower), and Clara Soppitt (Ingrid Bond).
There are lots of great lines during the play, and during the second half Joe Helliwell’s mistress Lottie (Hannah Marks) turns up. The reporter (Ian Jenkins) turn up to do a report on the happy couples along with his photographer (Neville Green) who reveals that he was also married by the same vicar and although he was not properly licensed the registrar was so everything is fine in the end. Other parts were also played very well Ruby (Helen Young) Nancy (Donna West) and Rev. Mercer (Micheal Watson)
Well done everyone on another great performance.
