Billed as a tribute to Dame Vera Lynn, who has recently celebrated her 100th birthday, this was a nostalgic look back of the music she had made famous as well as some other well known numbers of her era.
Starting with the well known number When the Lights go on Again this got everyone in the mood for what was to come, the evening contained such well known favourites as This is the Army Mr Jones, Kiss me Goodnight Sergeant Major, We're gonna hang out the Washing on the Siegfried Line, Keep the Homes Fires Burning and many more which kept the audience entertained all the way through.
There were also some great numbers from the Junior Ensemble which started with the well known favourite of mine and I am sure many other members of the audience, The Ovalteenies, this is something I have not heard for years and it did bring back some very happy memories. The youngsters also entertained us with it’s a long Way to Tipperary and Pack up your Troubles much to the delight of the audience.
There were some great solos, duets and trios such as You'll Never Know by Eve Rowles, A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square by Lynne Schofield, and a favourite of everyone The White Cliffs of Dover which was sang beautifully by Alison Wade who was then joined by the ensemble to bring the first half to a close with We'll Meet Again.
The second half opened with Chattanooga Choo Choo followed by a great number from Brandon Fletcher, Begin the Beguine which everyone loved, this was quickly followed by a trio from Alison Wade, Toni Cook and Hollie Riley, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy which was excellent.
The second half moved at a good pace with Wish me Luck as You Wave me Goodbye and Three Little Fishes by the Junior Ensemble and When I'm Cleaning Windows from Taryn Froggatt, who not only sang it as George Formby but also accompanied herself on the ukulele banjo just as George would have done all those years ago.
The night ended with Lambeth Walk and Land of Hope and Glory where everyone had the chance to wave their union flags prior to The National Anthem.
A great evening's entertainment which was enjoyed not only by the audience but also be the entire cast.
Many congratulations to everyone involved.
