Thank you very much for inviting me to your production of ‘We Will Rock You’.
We will rock you takes the music of Queen and takes elements from within the lyrics and creates a make-believe world sometime in the future where musical instruments are banned and only music created by the overbearing ‘Globalsoft Corportation’ is allowed. Killed Queen is on a mission to take down the Bohemians who threaten the future survival of Globalsoft.
Set
This year has seen another change of venue for Page2Stage moving into the Wesley Methodist Church in Saltash. With the production taking place within the main church area across two separate weekends it was important that the set was easily dismantled and set up again in time for each weekend of performances. The set was simple consisting mainly of a small raised staging area with a rock set upstage. A large white gauze was hung from the ceiling which created both a wing and back stage area as well as allowing for the projection of different locations to help with the setting of each scene. Various different scenic items and props were well managed by the cast during the transitions into different scenes such as the Hard Rock Café where a number of individuals took responsibility for bringing on their specific items to ensure a quick change of scene.
Lighting
Lighting was simple, again due the necessity to pack away each week, but allowed for the cast to be well lit across the entire performance area and to also add some changes in colour to effectively support the action on stage.
Sound
I was very impressed with the number of radio mics being used in this production. Well done. I know how big of an investment it is to have that many microphones but wow what a difference it makes. The whole show is performed to backing tracks which allows for a great deal of control over the music volume to ensure all of the vocals can be heard. The balance between singing and music was good and the whole company were giving it their all meaning their voices completely filled the very large space. With so many microphones being used it meant that the music could be played at a good volume that compliment the genre yet didn’t compromise the clarity and audible levels of the signing. Radio gaga was one of the opening numbers and was well delivered by all of the cast.
There were some strong individuals taking on the lead roles who had lovely singing voices. Under pressure was a lovely song with some good harmony singing on display.
Costume and Makeup
Costumes were very effective and were well designed to suit a futuristic feel. These costumes were sourced in house by one of the committee members. Arranging costumes for the number of cast in this production is no mean feat so well done on a job well done.
Additional comments
Overall it was a very enjoyable show and it was clear everyone enjoyed themselves. The principal cast were generally strong actors and performers and worked very well together as a whole but also building convincing relationships in their pairings. The ensemble played an important role in building atmosphere and supporting with strong singing in the larger cast numbers. It has been a challenging year as a company yet you are still thriving and providing young people with an invaluable opportunity to express themselves and build important relationships with other likeminded people.
Kind regards
