The Academy @CAST’s production of We will Rock you was a delightful celebration of not only the classic Rock score of Queen but of a diverse community youth theatre with everybody taking part rightly getting their moment in the spotlight. The experience of being part of such a show deserves to inspire others to join them on stage and give them the confidence and experience to develop as performers and in life.

Relatively simply set on an empty stage with three screens and LED strips and with a supplied Queen soundtrack to back the performers the focus was on the young people and their performances. Inevitably the “Bohemian Rhapsody” finale with everybody getting a line to sing made a tremendous conclusion to the show which was well choreographed and performed making sense of the famous 1975 video but there were some other equally impressive highlights including “Crazy little thing”, “Another one bites the dust”, “Under Pressure” and “I want it all”.

The Director of the production showed a good understanding of the need to give everybody a chance no matter their experience and successfully accommodated so many new faces making their Academy debut. He did a very good job marshalling the team and getting the best from them.

Overall this was a great team effort and a joy to watch and I look forward to seeing how these young people develop as performers in the coming years.
