It was lovely to join Mortimer Dramatic Society for their first show after the pandemic and I was made very welcome by the front of house team. The play, set in the BayView Retirement Home introduced us to Diana Trent and Tom Ballard two residents who were determined to grow old ungracefully. The script adapted from the television series was funny and full of adult humour, but between the one liners and quick wit, there was an important message about how society values and cares for old people. I understand that unfortunately a member of the cast was unable to perform on the night I attended, but in true fashion of “the show must go on”, other cast members stood in.

The two leading actors defined their characters with clarity and had lovely chemistry. They delivered their lines with great comedic timing and brought the audience to fits of laughter on several occasions. Together they created a very believable friendship and a non-traditional love story and along with the actors playing the care home staff, they gave great performances. The leads were very well supported by the rest of the cast with some excellent cameos. The director had clearly worked hard with the cast to create their characters and relationships and they worked well together. The set was well designed and of a high standard, adding realism to the stage, which along some excellent set painting gave lovely detail to the set.

Thank you once again for the invitation to join you and I look forward to your next production.
