USS Pinafore – FAOS really “pushed the boat out” on this one. A tremendous evening’s entertainment from beginning to end. A great deal of time and thought had gone into transporting the cast aboard the sailing ship HMS Pinafore to a different galaxy and the 24th century – on the spaceship USS Pinafore. The audience were equally transported and even a traditionalist like me was impressed. Congratulations to all those responsible for delivering the transformation.
The very colourful programme is a mine of information with background to the society, the show, the cast, and much more besides. A full page on the role of NODA was valued. Details of the committee and their role gives an insight into the strengths behind show. The sharing of information about other local productions is very much appreciated.
The set was on three levels and remained throughout the performance. Centre stage was the Captain’s chair behind which was the control desk. Behind the control desk three screen windows were opened to reveal the orchestra during the overture and lowered during the action. A splendid touch. On the outer side of the ramps, placed stage left and right, were small control desks which made a fresh change from the traditional stage left bench. The ‘automatic’ upstage doors very aptly reflected those on the Starship Enterprise. Props were minimal but appropriate – Union flags an essential.
The lighting sequences were an essential aspect of the show with very effective lighting of small areas when required. The sound was extremely well managed – from the opening overture, where the orchestra was perfectly balanced, to the very last note.
This is not a show for changes of costume however the creativity of the costumes for the non-crew members was superb especially that for the diminutive ‘Little Buttercup’. The outfits for the Sister, Cousin and Aunt were a sight to behold – so imaginative. The various wigs gave the crew that futuristic look and certainly added to the overall impression.
The orchestra was superb - the tone, the balance and the volume were all spot on. The orchestral arrangement really gave the impression there were far more of them than there were because of the breadth of sound that was created; with very sympathetic accompaniment of the singers. The chorus sang well and the harmonies were refreshing. Dealing with the new words did make diction difficult at times but they were determined to succeed. The opening of the overture featured the 'Star Trek' theme as did some of the final bars of the show.
FAOS productions are always the culmination of months of dedicated team work and this performance was no exception. To pick out individuals is to take away from the myriad of people whose input however humble is vital to the overall.
Good team - well balanced principals - excellent direction.
USS Pinafore - first class concept, execution and entertainment. Great to see Gilbert and Sullivan alive and well even in the 24th century.
