Once again Cleckheaton & Spenborough A.O.& D.S. presented a play based on a T. V. series, this time one that starred Frankie Howard. A cheeky comedy full of innuendos and more, the action takes place in the courtyard of Ludicrus Sextus's Villa in ancient Rome, prior to the eruption. All the characters had very suggestive names all adding to the fun and laughter.
Lurcio (James Creegan) portrayed the head slave brilliantly, narrating the story from start to finish, including lots of add libs of his own. Lots of great characters all working hard to extract every ounce of laughter from this bawdy romp. Ludicrus Sextus ((Jonathon Spry) the Master, his wife Ammonia, (Alice Dabrowska) his son Nausius, (Chris Avery) who spent his time chasing the beautiful slave Volupta (Karen Riding). Great team work from all other principals, far too numerous to mention, including Senna the Soothsayer, Captain Trecherous, a Slave Trader and Suspenda the Nymphomanic.
A striking set, colourful and well thought out, good props, and excellent costumes.
All ends as the Villa starts to tremble, with people running round in circles, smoke appearing from every corner and entrance, and brilliant lighting to suggest the eruption was taking place.
A jolly romp extremely well done, and mush appreciated by the audience.
