The play features some famous quotes including the opening line “If music be the food of love, play on.” The plot is complicated but involves a ship wreck, cross-dressing, a love triangle, forged love letters and a sub-plot involving an elaborate prank. Silchester Players benefitted from professional guidance with this production having been selected by the RSC to perform as part of their Open Stages project. There were some strong performances from the leading characters Stephen Bibby as Malvolio, Caroline Martin as Olivia, Nick Lock as Sir Toby Belch and Clive Solomons as Sir Andrew Aguecheek. There was some delightful singing from Sarah Oliver as Feste.
This production was overflowing with talent. In all areas: costume, sound, set and props, the calibre of those involved was evident. The audience were swept along with the comedy and the time sped by. The quality of acting throughout was excellent and congratulations should go to all who were involved – particularly Directors Brian and Jill Gillett, in rising to the challenge of bringing Shakespeare to Silchester for the first time.
