Agatha Twisty and the Murder in Pantoland
Shinfield Players Theatre, SPT
A tricky balance was involved in this production, involving as it did a cast of seven men and seven women portraying twenty-one male and two female presenting characters – although the play itself provides for potentially more. However the gender blind casting worked as a result of the priority given to characterisation. Although tempting to play in pantomime style, these dangers were avoided, with the play played largely straight and at pace. This was helped by a simple but effective set, boxes with multiple uses and back projection of the various locations.
