Adapted for the stage by the director Ron Perry from the Miss Read book “Thrush Green” the venue for this new play was a large marque set in a field in the middle of The New forest.

The rear walls of marque had clear panels which created the perfect back cloth, a green meadow full of yellow butter cups shining in the evening sun. The set was very simple, stage right had small raised rostrum and stage left was taken up by the home of Mrs Curdle, a magnificent, recently restored, travellers, horse drawn caravan.

The play follows the course of one day, the first May 1960, when the annual visit of Mrs Curdle’s travelling fair comes to Thrush Green

I thought that it was an excellent play which was very enjoyable. It had a large multi-talented cast of about twenty five. With a narrator to link it all together, it told a wonderful story of eccentric villages, long respected friendships and young love. True to life, at times it was very funny, but it was also thought provoking and moving towards the end.  One gentleman showing his great ability by playing three wonderful characters with only simple changes of costume.  All the cast were well drilled and clearly enjoying their performance, the characterisation was superb. I particularly enjoyed Dotty, Ella and Mrs Curdle

As Vice chairman of the company, I am sure that Ron Perry was able to write and direct the script to suit the talents and ability of this excellent cast.  He must certainly be very happy and very proud of his interpretation of “Thrush Green”. Redlynch Players certainly celebrated their 60th Anniversary in style
