The society overcame a big challenge in staging this frothy, funny musical at the Regency Hall.
The set designed and built by the members of the society under the leadership of Chairman Keith Williams worked well and was very colourful.
This was a fast moving, attractive production by David Jones. 1922 and New York is a mix of prohibition, bootleggers, white-slave traders, glamour and excitement. Wide- eyed innocent Millie , arrives from a Kansas small town determined to become a "modern" and find a rich bachelor to marry. Tessa Rees sparkled as as our heroine Millie, with a big hitting voice and a nice style in comedy in her feisty relationship with good-looking man- about-town New Yorker Jimmy Smith played with an easy charm and good voice by Gareth Morris. But the rich bachelor Millie has her eye on is her boring boss, the stiff necked trevor Graydon played well by Marc Styles, who sang with good diction the tricky patter numbert " The Speed Test", blatantly nicked from Gilbert and Sullivan. Alison Butler was colourfully comic as the psuedo Chinese hotelier and evil whie-slave procurer Mrs. Meers, with Steve Butler and Jessica Wheeler finding singing and playing in Chinese no barrier to comedy as her henchmen Ching Ho and Bun Foo. A delightful performance by Kelly Jackson, potential white-slave victim, the sweet Miss Dorothy.Andrea Thomas swept all before her as the elegant Muzzy, and Hilary Robinson was suitably fearsome as office supervisor Miss Flannery. The many supporting roles were well covered by the company. The band, directed by Clive Raymond played at a bright lively tempo and sounded just right. Atractively costumed by the society (Pat Williams and team), with good sound and lighting the show was well presented and the society can be justly proud of their staging of this big demanding musical.
A big well done to everyone involved with this production. Once again thank you for your hospitality . Thank you for a great evening`s entertainment. Keep up the good work.
