As I am still relatively new to Gilbert & Sullivan this was another production I knew very little about prior to my visit. As I entered the auditorium the minimalist black box set, consisted of a large imposing grey brick effect arch structure, the entrance to the Tower. This had some raised staging that allowed members of the cast to stand on top, adding height and visual impact. A single wooden headsmen block which remained centre stage throughout was lit by a spotlight. A two-headed marotte stood downstage right a grim twist on the traditional jester’s staff with two severed heads mounted at the top. With the use of haze it was a macabre sight, setting the scene for probably the darkest of Gilbert & Sullivans works.

Director Sarah Nash, set the scene so well, and I really liked this minimalist set. Using the headsmen block throughout in various guises, worked really well. I also really liked how every cast member, principals and ensemble, when they came near the Marotte, responded in different ways, a nice touch. The choreography throughout was simple but appropriate to the style and varying abilities. The show moved slickly throughout.

The 11-piece orchestra, hidden behind the Cyc were ably led by Musical Director John Pitts and brought the music to life beautifully. The balance worked well throughout.

The lighting was a real feature of this production and really enhanced the mood and atmosphere, with effective use of colour wash and spots.  Sound was clear throughout, I could hear everyone and the balance between vocals and orchestra was great throughout.

Costumes and Makeup was appropriate to the story and helped define all the characters suitably.

All the Principal characters gave some lovely, polished performances with lovely rich vocals throughout.

Sir Richard Cholmondeley: Another great character role from you, delivered with confidence and presence.

Colonel Fairfax: Some lovely clear vocals throughout, delivered with ease.

Sergeant Meryll: As usual, a very polished performance throughout.

Leonard Meryll: A nicely understated performance that worked well within the story.

Jack Point: A strong character and very entertaining performance. You held the audience’s attention throughout, I felt suitably sorry for your character at the end.

Wilfred Shadbolt:This was played well with an excellent blend of creepiness and humour, which worked really well.

Elsie Maynard: Beautiful vocals throughout, delivered with sensitivity and control. I particularly liked the relationship you created with Point.

Phoebe Meryll: A lovely mezzo voice, and you captured both the lovestruck and comedic moments beautifully.

Dame Carruthers: Some lovely comedic moments alongside a strong, powerful performance. You brought great character and presence to the role.

Kate: A lovely voice, and I really enjoyed your quartet. You all blended so well.

Chorus of Yeomen Warders: Some lovely harmonies in your numbers, well done.

Chorus of Citizens: As I have come to expect with this group, everyone showed lovely characterisations and stayed animated throughout. There were some excellent vocals and clear harmony lines, making for a very engaging ensemble.

Another really strong performance from Bristol Gilbert & Sullivan Operatic Society, you should be really proud, well done.
