Clevedon Gilbert and Sullivan Society have been established since 1972 and this was the 5th time they have performed The Yeoman of the Guard. It is such a shame that in the main, young people are not attracted to the works of G & S. As a medium for learning classic singing and stage craft it is a means that is becoming lost. Nevertheless with a full company, Clevedon presented a valiant production of this classic operetta. The society was fortunate to obtain the services of Dean Ward, an accomplished tenor in the lead role of Colonel Fairfax, and very good he was in the part. The many other principals and the large chorus supported him with enthusiasm.
A lovely orchestra conducted by MD Carol Kenway supported the singers with expert playing and the well known overture was a delight. The show was colourful with very good costumes particularly the red uniforms of the Yeomen Warders; with their pikes to hand they were a splendid vision. I sincerely wish Clevedon G&S Society well in striving to continue their valuable contribution to the diversity of musical theatre in Somerset. Come on all you G&S aficionados, support and sustain your local society. They are presenting ‘The Mikado’ next year, a gem of a show! I look forward to it.
