My first WOW Show and this very young company (average age fourteen) worked their socks off. Opening the show with a bang and ‘Baggy Trousers’ was Alex Rogan and the Company, followed by a sweet but not slushy rendition of ‘It Must Be Love’, featuring Luke Southorn and Charlotte Watson.
Alex Rogon and Jamie Dovell drew us Into the Woods with their fervent performance of ‘Agony’. The Witches of Eastwick (Rhian Stroud, Ellie Ninham and Abigail Brewster) were at their most beguiling with ‘I Wish I May’, singing with skill and passion – simply entrancing. Charlie Vaughan was a delightfully sprightly Billy Elliot, expressing himself in a dress with energy and verve.
Act Two opened briskly with chirpy Cockney Music Hall hits, the Company stepping it out with gusto. The duet ‘In His Eyes’ was beautifully executed by Abigail Brewster and Ellie Ninham. Shannon Parfitt and Clare Phelan treated us to some excellent vocal characterisation and expression in ‘The Grass is Always Greener’ (What’s so Wonderful?).
The Company impressed with their circus skills in juggling ‘One Brick at a Time’ and miraculously dropping nothing. And just how do you get those bricks to stay together for the final stunt? Totally impressed!
Sean Roberts as Honk melted our hearts, which were soon soaring again in the final sequence, as Clare Phelan, Lucy Bone and Maggie Ayles sang ‘Be My Baby’; the boys were great in ‘I’m a Believer’, chins up and giving it some welly, and the entire Company went out on a high ‘Dancing in the Street’.
Despite a few technical hitches with sound, what a lovely evening this was, from a delightful young company with lots of potential. I look forward to seeing them again as they continue to grow their own talent.
