The Wizard of Oz is a timeless piece and suitable for any time of the year unlike the traditional panto normally performed during the Christmas season. The story is of a little girl’s dreams of what lies over the rainbow. It involves Munchkins, Wicked Witches, haunted forests, a scarecrow, a tin man and a lion all of which add to the rich tapestry that is “The Wizard of Oz” - originally written by L.Frank Baum but adapted by Frank Gabrielson.
It was delightful to read all the pen pictures of such a young cast - Southampton Operatic Society's 'Debut Youth Theatre' - in the programme. The acting space was used extremely well with a minimum of scenery and props giving plenty of space for the cast. The ‘bridge’ was cleverly created and well executed giving a real impression of travel. The ‘cauldron’ was also well crafted. The cast skilfully manhandled the basket of the hot air balloon. The use of the cast to move scenery and props was most appropriate however the hard-working stage crew worked unobtrusively to support the cast. The overall appearance of the cast was first rate from their hair or headpieces past the well made up faces to the suitable footwear for dancing. The speciality costumes were extremely well made. The wardrobe mistresses are to be congratulated on their creativity. All the crew are to be congratulated. The music provided by a pianist was invaluable giving a lead which enabled the cast to sing well.
This show moved at a great pace, as the story unfolded, not flagging at any stage - the audience focus was kept up throughout. The principals were well cast and appeared to be totally immersed in the action; the chorus were clearly focussed despite their ages – they seemed so confident and well trained. At the end of the show the buzz of enjoyment from the audience was palpable throughout the theatre.
Congratulations to all those involved in bringing this show to fruition you should be justly proud.
